Aston Villa will '100%' strengthen key area after bringing Kamara to Villa Park

Aston Villa head coach Steven Gerrard on the touchline

Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard could look to strengthen his defence next after signing midfielder Boubacar Kamara, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

The Midlands club recently announced the arrival of the Frenchman, and Jones says a new centre-back will “100%” follow.

What is the latest news involving Villa?

Villa recently confirmed that Kamara has joined Gerrard’s side on a five-year deal from Marseille.

On his arrival, the Villans boss told the club’s official website: “I am delighted that we have been able to attract one of the most promising young talents in European football. We have a very clear plan to make our team stronger and Bouba is an important part of that.”

Villa have been able to pick up the 22-year-old on a free transfer, with his contract at Marseille expiring next month.

In total, he made 170 appearances for the Phocaeans, coming through the club’s youth ranks.

What has Jones said about Villa?

Jones now expects a new central defender to join Kamara at Villa Park as Gerrard looks to strengthen his side further.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, the transfer insider said: “100%, centre-back is going to be strengthened. We’ve seen that it’s not been safe enough back there in recent months, so Gerrard is aware of this side’s flaws, and certainly defensively, there needs to be a fix.”

Which centre-backs could Villa target?

Two centre-halves who have been linked with Villa are Liverpool’s Joe Gomez and Inter Milan’s Stefan de Vrij.

According to the Daily Mirror, Gerrard is targeting Gomez, who made just four starts in the 2021/22 Premier League campaign.

Elsewhere, Football Insider has claimed that De Vrij is wanted by Villa, Tottenham and Newcastle United.

Latest reports suggest that Gomez could sign a new contract at Liverpool, so a move to Villa Park is anything but a guarantee.

De Vrij, however, looks a strong possibility, as his current deal expires next year and it does not look like he is going to sign a new one. Of course, Villa are likely to face a lot of competition if they do try to sign the Dutchman in the coming months, which is hardly a shock.

He is a seasoned defender who has won the Serie A title before and played for his country on 55 occasions, making it little surprise that Spurs and Newcastle are also circling.

All of the above means Gerrard may not end up with De Vrij or Gomez this summer, but given how aggressive Villa have been in the transfer market of late, you would expect them to at least make a serious push for a defender of De Vrij or Gomez’s quality.
