Photos have emerged of what a new stadium for the Washington Commanders could look like, and to say they’re impressive would be an understatement.

The ‘Washington’ part of the Washington Commanders team name is certainly something of a misleading one, because ever since they moved to Fedex Field in 1997, they haven’t taken residency in Washington D.C itself.

Having left RFK Stadium after the 1996 season, the team plays its games in nearby Maryland, although with the stadium just 11.5 miles away from the White House, it’s still relatively close enough that they can keep the name ‘Washington’ without looking too silly.

However, things could very well change in the coming years after reports have emerged suggesting that they could be about to move far away from the capital and into another nearby state in Virginia.

Where are they going?

According to John Keim of ESPN, the Commanders have recently paid as much as $100m to buy a spot of land in Woodbridge, Virginia, which is roughly 35 miles south of Fedex Field, with the report going on to state exactly what the plot of land is set to be used for.

It claims that “According to a source, their plans include a 60,000-seat domed stadium -- so it can be used throughout the year -- as well as: the team's practice facility; an amphitheater that seats between 15,000 and 20,000; a small indoor music arena; high-end retail shops; bars and restaurants and residential living.”

What’s it going to look like?

A further report from Michael Phillips for Richmond.com, who claims the whole complex will cost $3bn, has provided photos of what the new stadium could look like, and they certainly are embracing the modern age with what they look to build as the artist’s rendition shows:

Whether or not it will look like this when and if it is completed we’ll just have to wait and see.

But with impressive competition for new, modern stadiums to compete with like SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas and Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, they need to make sure they get the stadium right if they want to keep up with some of the new builds in the league.
