Tottenham Hotspur target Alessandro Bastoni is ‘only going to get better’ at this stage of his career, according to Italian football expert Conor Clancy.

Spurs have been linked to a plethora of defenders in recent weeks as manager Antonio Conte looks to bolster his backline over the upcoming transfer window.

What is the latest news involving Bastoni?

According to Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport (via Sport Witness), Inter CEO Giuseppe Marotta has disclosed that the club need to make ‘at least one important sacrifice’ this summer to balance the books.

It’s claimed that Inter will have to make around €60-70 million (£51.1- £59.6m) and reduce their wages by 10 to 15 percent, and when it comes to offloading a star name, Bastoni is said to be in the ‘front row’.

The same outlet also suggests that Tottenham are ready to ‘throw themselves’ at Bastoni by making ‘an important offer’ for the 23-year-old as Conte has made him his priority signing.

Inter are believed to value their prized asset at around €70m (£59.6m) and will demand a higher fee than the one Spurs paid for Cristian Romero as he has won fewer titles.

What has Clancy said about Bastoni?

The Nerazzurri’s Stefan de Vrij has also been linked with a reunion with Conte in north London, but Clancy has revealed he would be ‘singing and dancing’ if he was a Tottenham supporter and Bastoni joined.

He told GiveMeSport: “I think either will be a good partner for Romero, especially in a Conte team because they've both worked with Conte before.

“But if I was a Spurs fan and we were signing Alessandro Bastoni. I would be singing and dancing because I think he's an incredible player. And he's only going to get better as he goes on.”

How good is Bastoni?

Bastoni formed a key part of the Serie A’s best defence throughout 2020/21 under Conte as Inter claimed their first top-flight title in 11 years.

However, the Italy international has also showcased his ability to perform the duties expected of a centre-back playing in a back three in the modern era.

As per FBref, Bastoni has ranked in the 99th percentile for progressive passes received, 90th for assists and 97th for shot-creating actions amongst his positional peers over the last year.

And he also found himself in the 89th for progressive carries, 86th for progressive passes and 86th for passes attempted, highlighting how comfortable he is with the ball at his feet.

Tottenham and director of football Fabio Paratici are known to be in the market for a left-sided centre-back and Bastoni could be the ideal candidate to fulfil that role.
