Southampton 'still interested' in signing 41-goal 'extreme talent' at St Mary's

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl thanks the fans

Southampton are still interested in signing Armando Broja this summer, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

The 41-goal Albania international spent the 2021-2022 season on loan at St Mary’s Stadium, but he announced on Monday that his spell on the South Coast has come to an end.

What’s the latest news involving Broja?

Despite failing to score in his last three months as a Southampton player, the 20-year-old still enjoyed a productive first full season in English football.

Across all competitions, Broja chipped in with nine goals and one assist in 38 appearances as Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men finished 15th.

Do you know this obscure player Southampton signed in the January transfer window?

As a result, the striker is a man in demand, with Jones previously telling GiveMeSport that a reunion with Frank Lampard at Everton could be on the cards, while Goal believe that several Serie A clubs, West Ham and Newcastle are also keen on the youngster’s services.

Broja is in line to return to Chelsea and compete for a place in Thomas Tuchel’s squad, but Jones is sceptical about how much game-time he might get and revealed that Southampton remain keen on him.

What did Jones about Broja?

He told GIVEMESPORT: “They say he’s going to get a chance, but how much of a chance he gets, I’m not sure. Southampton are still interested in bringing him back and even though he fell off in terms of goals, they still feel like he’s an extreme talent.”

Why do Southampton want to keep Broja?

There’s two reasons why Southampton are likely to want to re-sign Broja.

The first is because he’s an extremely exciting young player. His eventual goal tally proved a disappointing one, especially considering he went more than three months without seeing the net bulge, but he proved far more than just a goalscorer.

And he hasn’t gone unnoticed, with Spain manager Luis Enrique praising him after his side beat Albania in the March international break.

He said: “Broja is very strong. If you look at him at Southampton he causes problems for the best central defenders in the world.”

Furthermore, Southampton look light up front going into next season. They still have Che Adams and Adam Armstrong on their books, but Shane Long is set to depart once his contract expires, which would leave them with just two senior frontmen, highlighting their need for another striker in the squad.
