Canelo Alvarez has promised to ‘end what we started’ after it was announced he will face Gennady Golovkin in their trilogy fight later this year.

After waiting so long for it to be confirmed, fight fans can finally start to get excited about the prospect of seeing Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin square off for the third time in their respective careers. The first bout came almost five years ago with a split draw being the end result, although many felt as if GGG had done enough to get his hand raised.

The rematch, twelve months later, allowed Canelo to somewhat ‘avenge’ the result of their first meeting as he came away with a disputed decision win.

It’s been four long years since that night in 2018 but it’s finally time to see who the baddest super middleweight on the planet is with the WBA (Super), WBC, IBF, WBO, and The Ring titles being on the line.

The date has been set as September 17 but as of this writing, no venue has been confirmed.

Both men put the announcement out there for the world to see on social media with Canelo being sure to send a message to his rival in the process.

“I'm really happy to bring you the best fights and this one will be no exception. It's time to end what we started and defend our titles. #CaneloGGG3 this September 17th.”

Making a statement

Whereas Golovkin is coming off the back of a nice stoppage win over Ryōta Murata, the state of play is slightly different for Canelo Alvarez.

The Mexican star was unable to take the WBA light heavyweight title away from Dmitry Bivol and instead, fell to just his second loss as a pro boxer.

In many ways this actually adds to the sense of intrigue behind this encounter with nobody really knowing what sort of dynamic to expect in the fight.

Will GGG’s age play a factor, or will the Bivol defeat impact the confidence in Canelo?

There are plenty of variables and as the countdown to fight night continues, we can expect to see a lot of storylines being floated around.
