Former UFC champion Holly Holm is now viewed as the frontrunner to battle Katie Taylor at Croke Park.

While she may have fallen to a split decision loss against Ketlen Vieira last weekend, Holly Holm is still seen by many as one of the most iconic female MMA stars of the last decade. Her work in the sport, with the highlight being her knockout win over Ronda Rousey, has indicated that it is indeed possible to make a successful transition over to mixed martial arts from professional boxing.

Holm, 40, is always looking to push herself to the limit in whichever way possible - and as per the Irish Independent, she may get the opportunity to do so in one of the biggest fights of her career with a move back to the squared circle.

The report indicates that talks between Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano regarding a rematch between them have stalled. Because of this, Holm has slipped into first place in the ‘who will get the Taylor fight this autumn’ stakes.

The proposed bout would allow Taylor to return home to Ireland in what would serve as a triumphant moment for the 35-year-old, who hasn’t actually competed in her own country since turning professional.

Holm, meanwhile, doesn’t have a whole lot left to prove in the UFC, and the defeat to Vieira - however controversial it may have been - puts her even further away from another title shot.

Will we see Taylor vs Serrano 2?

Last month in front of a capacity crowd at Madison Square Garden, Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano produced one of the greatest women’s boxing matches of all-time. Serrano wobbled Taylor and had her in real trouble but across all ten rounds, it was the Irish sensation who managed to do enough to get the decision nod.

The WBA, WBC, IBF, WBO, and The Ring female lightweight titles were on the line and the first thought in the mind of the masses after the result was read was that we need to see them run it back.

If this report is to be believed, though, we may have to wait a little while longer.
