Tottenham would be getting a "brilliant wing-back" if they sign Atalanta's Joakim Maehle in the next transfer window, according to Italian football expert Conor Clancy.

Antonio Conte is keen to add fresh faces to his squad this summer, and Maehle could be one of the players that he targets.

What's the latest news involving Maehle?

The Telegraph reported last month that Conte is looking to bring in six new signings, including a wing-back ahead of next season.

His cause is set to be helped by Tottenham's majority shareholders ENIC Sports Inc pumping an extra £150m into the club, as revealed on Tuesday.

According to the Daily Mail, Spurs have identified Maehle as a potential option to bolster their squad, and he could be the last player to join from Atalanta, after they signed Cristian Romero and Pierluigi Gollini from the Serie A outfit last summer.

What has Clancy said about Maehle?

Clancy has admitted that Maehle has had an injury-disrupted campaign, and he has fallen out of favour under Gian Piero Gasperini at Atalanta at times.

However, he still views the defender as a high-class player, which is something that he proved during Denmark's run to the semi-finals of the European Championships last year.

Speaking about Maehle, Clancy told GIVEMESPORT: “I think he’s a brilliant wing-back. You see it with Denmark, everyone saw it in the Euros. He’s phenomenal going forward, he can score, he can assist. He’s good defensively as well, but with Atalanta, he’s been a little bit strange.

“Halfway through the season, he found a little bit of form, he was scoring goals, but then he had an injury and this year he’s not played that much. And Atalanta haven’t been in-form either, so I can’t work out why, but there’s obviously something there that Gasperini doesn’t quite trust.”

Would Maehle go straight into Tottenham's starting XI?

This season has not gone to plan for Atalanta and Maehle, with the Italian side missing out on European football altogether, while the 25-year-old has been in and out of the team.

However, he has racked up 13 Champions League appearances in the last three seasons, and he was a standout performer at the Euros in 2021, highlighting that he has plenty of talent.

The wing-back positions have been an issue for Conte ever since he arrived, with Matt Doherty and Emerson Royal both failing to cement their place at right-back, while Sergio Reguilon and Ryan Sessegnon have been largely underwhelming on the opposite flank as well.

Maehle, who is valued at £15.3m by Transfermarkt, can cover either role, which may make him an appealing option to Conte, and if he can rediscover his best form, he should be capable of walking into Tottenham's starting line-up next term, should he opt to move to north London.
