Leeds now 'have hope' they can keep £85.5m duo at Elland Road

Leeds United manager Jesse Marsch and owner Andrea Radrizzani

Leeds United have hope that they can keep Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha at Elland Road, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

Both players continue to be linked with moves away from the Yorkshire club, but Jones thinks manager Jesse Marsch and owner Andrea Radrizzani will be feeling a bit more optimistic about retaining the duo after avoiding relegation.

What is the latest news involving Phillips and Raphinha?

Reports suggest that Phillips is emerging as Manchester City’s top midfield target.

According to the Daily Mail and The Telegraph, the Premier League champions are keen on signing the England international this summer as they look to replace the outgoing Fernandinho.

Meanwhile, Sky Sports has claimed that Barcelona are about to formalise their interest in Raphinha, who does not want to sign a new contract at Elland Road.

Currently, the Leeds duo are at valued at £85.5m combined by Transfermarkt.

What has Jones said about Phillips, Raphinha and Leeds?

With Leeds retaining their Premier League status thanks to their win against Brentford and Burnley’s loss to Newcastle United on the last day of the season, Jones thinks the Whites will now have a bit more hope when it comes to trying to keep hold of Phillips and Raphinha.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, the transfer insider said: “They need to sort out the Phillips and Raphinha situation quickly to know where they stand on both those players. I think now they’ll have hope, but how much hope we’ll have to wait and see.”

Should Phillips and Raphinha stay at Elland Road for another season?

With Leeds guaranteed to be playing in the Premier League next term, Phillips and Raphinha remaining at the club for one more year would not be a catastrophe for either player.

At 26 and 25 respectively, time is on their side. If they stay at Leeds and continue to perform, then they could still easily get big moves later down the line.

Do you know this obscure player Leeds signed in the January transfer window?

However, the clout of City and Barcelona may make it too hard to say no now. So if serious bids do come in, it would be a surprise if Marsch had a starting XI that included both Phillips and Raphinha in it next season.

And from Leeds’ perspective, this summer may represent their best chance to rake in £50m plus for each player. In the next summer transfer window, if the pair have remained at Elland Road without signing new deals, they will have just one year to run on their contracts, something other clubs would undoubtedly look to exploit in negotiations.

All in all, it is quite a complex situation Leeds are in with the midfielder and winger.
