Every new release competes for the attention of gamers everywhere but a new list has confirmed that only three of the top-played games of the year have been released in 2022.
Data from the market analysis company NPD Group has revealed the top 10 list for the year, and it includes a variety of releases from years ago, instead of 2021.
The only video games released in the last year that feature in the top 10 are Madden NFL 22, NBA 2K22, and Call of Duty: Vanguard.
That isn’t necessarily all that surprising.
Sports games always tend to do well, as evidenced by the presence of FIFA 22 in pretty much every weekly release chart in the UK.
Call of Duty is also a behemoth when it comes to the franchise and its sales, while all three have extensive multiplayer options that can extend the shelf life of the game.
The franchises also have baked-in fanbases who will consistently buy every release that comes out regardless of quality.
The list orders the games via release date rather than by any sort of player count, so it isn’t clear if the top game on the list – Minecraft – is actually the top-played game of the year.
However, it is certainly in the top 10, which remains staggering for a game that was released in 2009.
The full list can be seen below.
- Minecraft (2009)
- Grand Theft Auto V (2013)
- The Sims 4 (2014)
- Fortnite (2017)
- Among Us (2018)
- Animal Crossing: New Horizons (2020)
- Call of Duty: Warzone (2020)
- Madden NFL 22 (2021)
- Call of Duty: Vanguard (2021)
- NBA 2K22 (2021)
You may be thinking: Where on earth is Elden Ring?
From Software’s epic RPG has been a huge critical and commercial success but the game is actually the 20th most-played game of the year.
That may be due to its steep learning curve and the fact that the multiplayer options are nowhere near as accessible as some of the games in the top 10.
Amazingly, it actually ranked behind Skyrim, as well as Rocket League and World of Warcraft.
