The Formula 1 season heads to the jewel in the crown this weekend as the Monaco Grand Prix returns for another year.

A quick turnaround has taken place for the teams with them leaving red-hot Barcelona and heading around the Mediterranean coast to Monte-Carlo, for round seven of the world championship.

There's always excitement when the Monaco Grand Prix comes around, and there's a real sense of intrigue as to how the new cars are going to be handled by the drivers around the tight streets and turns.

When does each session take place this weekend in Monaco, then? We take a look now...

Friday

There are two practice sessions on Friday in Monte-Carlo, in a break from tradition for the sport.

Usually, the two initial practice sessions have been held on a Thursday in Monaco but with back-to-back races with the Spanish GP, the decision was made to ease the logistic challenge and put practice back to Friday for 2022.

FP1 takes place at 1pm UK time and lasts for an hour, whilst FP2 is scheduled for 4pm UK time, also for an hour.

Saturday

Saturday sees the third and final practice session, before the drivers gear up for perhaps the most important qualifying of the year.

The tight nature of the circuit means overtaking is at a minimum in Monte-Carlo and those that start at the front usually finish at the front as well.

FP3 will be held at 12pm UK time before qualifying takes place at 3pm UK time.

Sunday

The Grand Prix gets underway at 2pm UK time, with 78 laps of the world-famous circuit scheduled.

It's a track that can sometimes throw up processional races but, hopefully, we'll still see some action over the course of the race.

The thrill of seeing the best drivers and cars inches from the wall at high speed never gets old, though, and it remains only Monaco that can deliver such a unique challenge.
