Wolves’ 2021/22 campaign will be remembered as a weird one, finishing with a seven-game winless run and dropping to tenth in the table. A busy summer lies ahead and Dean Jones has provided GIVEMESPORT with a guide to the Molineux outfit’s transfer window.
Where could Wolves strengthen this summer?
Bruno Lage wants a goalscorer to ease the pressure on Raul Jimenez as a priority, while changes to his defence are going to be needed as this side continues to transition towards his style of football.
There is a need for the owners to dig into their pockets as competition in the league will mean they risk dropping down the division if they do not keep improving the squad.
Who could Wolves sign this summer?
This is a club that do not typically track the same players as most other clubs in the Premier League. They are proud to think differently, usually towards Portugal, of the success they have built with their model. They did of course invest big money on Fabio Silva, and are still waiting for that to pay off.
In goal they are being linked with young Chicago Fire goalkeeper Gabriel Slonina, who is very highly rated and has interest from some big clubs around Europe.
Wolves have also been checking out two Vitoria Guimaraes players in Andre Almeida and Guilherme Guedes.
In attack they have been linked with a move for Venezia striker Thomas Henry.
One dream signing for Wolves this summer?
Goncalo Guedes from Valencia has the wow factor that might help this Wolves team take off again. There is a general feeling that due to Valencia’s financial condition he could be available at a good price this summer and Wolves are believed to have been tracking his situation. Transfermarkt value him at £36m.
On his day Guedes is as good as they come. He was brought up in the Benfica youth system and then joined PSG in 2017 but was moved on to Valencia permanently in 2018.
He’s a Portuguese international, can play anywhere across the front line (though definitely prefers the left flank) and his ball mastery is mesmeric.
Lukaku is WORLD CLASS! It’s all Tuchel’s fault! Hear why on The Football Terrace…
Who’s leaving Molineux?
The big rumours will swirl around Joao Moutinho and Ruben Neves. Moutinho needs a new contract and Wolves will hope to convince him to stay, though Neves could also be picked up as he considers what the next step is in his own career.
Adama Traore is another high profile figure in doubt, as he is set to return from a loan spell at Barca. It seems unlikely he resurrects his career at Molineux.
Romain Saiss, Marcal and John Ruddy have contracts expiring.
Biggest challenge at Wolves this summer?
They need to keep Moutinho and Neves together for one more year while they go through this period of transition. Lage needs them helping in the dressing room and on the training ground, as well as on the turf on a match day.
Then the club need to pull off another masterclass in recruitment. We know they are capable of it, we know they will have some gems in their sights. But they have to find the right blend of talent here or things could quickly spiral.
