Just like in 2018, Liverpool will face Real Madrid in the Champions League final.

A lot has happened in the four years since that final in Kyiv but the two iconic clubs will meet once again in the biggest showpiece event in club football.

We all remember what happened in Ukraine.

Mohamed Salah went off injured after being hauled down by Sergio Ramos before a brace of Loris Karius mistakes allowed Gareth Bale (x2 - including a stunning overhead kick) and Karim Benzema to fire Real Madrid to a 3-1 victory.

Jurgen Klopp's side quickly put that disappointment behind them and claimed the European Cup 12 months later against Tottenham.

However, the pain of that night in Kyiv is still raw for everyone connected with Liverpool - especially Salah.

Ahead of this final, The Egyptian has spoken on numerous occasions about getting 'revenge' on the Spanish side.

"I remember when I left the field after 30 minutes of that game it was the worst moment of my career," said Salah. "I was really down. I had a good season and then to play my first Champions League final and come off so soon was the worst thing that could happen to me.

"I found out the result while I was in the hospital. I thought we just could not lose the game in that way. I never felt that way before in football."

But it wasn't just Salah who still feels bitterness towards Real Madrid and Ramos. Everyone associated with Liverpool does too.

And that includes Harvey Elliott.

In 2018, Elliott was merely an academy player at Fulham and travelled to Kyiv with his dad to cheer on his favourite club.

He was as gutted as every other Liverpool fan at what happened that night.

A year later, Elliott found himself at the home of Real Madrid with the European giants one of many clubs interested in signing the youngster.

And according to a report in the Athletic, they "rolled out the red carpet" for him as they looked to beat the likes of Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal to sign Elliott.

Part of their charm offensive included the opportunity to meet the club captain, Ramos. But Elliott wasn't interested.

“There was a tour of the Bernabeu and their training ground complex as they sought to convince the youngest player to play in the Premier League to move to the Spanish capital last summer,” the report reads.

“When they reached Sergio Ramos’ shirt, hanging up on the wall, Real’s charm offensive included an offer to arrange for the talented teenager to meet their long-serving captain.

“‘No, it’s OK, thanks,’ Elliott replied. ‘I don’t like him after what he did to Mo Salah.’”

Liverpool swooped in for Elliott that summer and signed the 16-year-old who had made three first-team appearances for Fulham.

He's now been at Anfield for three years and has forced his way into Klopp's first-team plans, playing 20 times in all competitions. At the start of this current campaign, he was a regular starter in midfield before a horrific ankle injury at Leeds stunted his season. He's since recovered and is back to full fitness ahead of the Champions League final.

And now, he's desperate for his own revenge.

“For myself, it’s my own revenge. I want to take that upset and disappointment as a fan and make sure I put it right at the weekend if I’m needed," he said.

“It's going to be a crazy experience to be able to say I've been there as a fan and then as a player and hopefully get a chance to play. We'll see. I'm just so excited, and hopefully we can put it right.”
