Toto Wolff says that he is not expecting too much from Mercedes this weekend as the F1 circus travels to Monaco for round 7 of the world championship.

The paddock has had to move quickly this week with it upping sticks in Barcelona on Sunday evening and heading around the Mediterranean to pitch up in Monte-Carlo for the most iconic of Grand Prix weekends.

It's going to be fascinating seeing the new cars taking on the challenge, too, with them bigger than ever and harder to see out of than their predecessors.

Another fascinating subplot to this weekend is going to be watching how well Mercedes go after showing signs of improvement in Spain, with George Russell taking P3 and Lewis Hamilton earning P5 after a race-long surge through the field after a lap one incident.

Undoubtedly, the Mercedes appears to be improving as a package but in the unique surroundings of the Monaco Grand Prix, Toto Wolff has said that their progress may well be stunted a little this weekend, before they kick on again once more.

Speaking ahead of the action in Monte-Carlo, Wolff explained:

“Monaco in the past wasn’t our most happy place, maybe because the car had the size of an elephant.

“But I’ll be curious to see where we are this weekend.

“We still struggled with the warm-up a little bit [in Spain.] So my expectations for Monaco are lower than on any other circuit. I’m not sure I can explain scientifically why that is, but it’s going to be another learning point, at least, to bring us back into the game.”

The F1 paddock will certainly be watching Mercedes keenly this weekend as it'll be the latest opportunity to see just what progress they have made.

Wolff is right in saying that Monaco has not always been their strongest circuit - at least not by their massively high standards - but it's still a chance to get good points and if they have strong one-lap pace then they obviously have a chance of getting a positive result given the nature of this race.
