Leeds United are set to get a deal for Red Bull Salzburg star Brenden Aaronson 'over the line' and it is 'exciting news' for fans at Elland Road, according to journalist Pete O'Rourke.

The Whites only maintained their Premier League status a matter of days ago, with them staving off relegation to the Championship by three points, but it seems they are close to completing their first signing under Jesse Marsch's reign.

What's the latest news involving Aaronson?

It is understood that Leeds are on the verge of finalising a £22.3million deal which would see Aaronson swap the Austrian top flight for Yorkshire.

The creative midfielder is already in England undergoing a medical ahead of the transfer being announced, with the switch expected to be confirmed before the United States' upcoming international fixtures.

Aaronson has been on Leeds director of football Victor Orta's radar for a prolonged period of time, with bids of £15million and £20million failing during the January transfer window.

Although there has been an alteration in the dugout since those offers, with Marsch succeeding Marcelo Bielsa in February, that did not end the Whites' interest in the 21-year-old.

In fact, Marsch told Leeds chairman Andrea Radrizzani he is a big admirer of his fellow countryman and urged his employers to push ahead with plans to lure him to Elland Road.

What has Pete O'Rourke said about Aaronson?

O'Rourke believes Leeds will finally get their man and sign Aaronson imminently, which would show their ambition ahead of next season.

The journalist feels Orta will have been working around the clock to get a deal in place before the summer transfer window officially opens next month.

O'Rourke told GIVEMESPORT: "I think it's exciting news for Leeds fans that this Aaronson deal looks like it's going to get over the line.

"They tried to do it in January but weren't able to do it with RB Salzburg still in the Champions League at that stage.

"Obviously, the groundwork was done at that time to try and get this deal permanent for the summer as well."

Why is Aaronson of interest to Leeds?

Aaronson has enjoyed a season to remember after chalking up 16 goal contributions and playing a key role in Salzburg's run to the knockout stages of the Champions League.

The 18-cap United States international has also enjoyed plenty of success since swapping his homeland for Austria, with him winning the double in each of the last two campaigns.

Aaronson's creativity and goal threat could be key for a Leeds side which only scored 42 goals throughout the Premier League season.
