Southampton target Keane Lewis-Potter "definitely fits the mould" at St Mary's Stadium, according to The Sun journalist Tom Barclay.

The 21-year-old has caught the eye of several Premier League clubs following his explosive form in the Championship for Hull City, with Ralph Hasenhuttl's side one of those in the running for his signature.

What's the latest news involving Lewis-Potter?

Lewis-Potter first became of interest when he scored 13 goals and laid on six assists to fire the Tigers to League One promotion last season.

However, clubs only started to properly take note when the versatile attacker started proving himself in the second-tier of English football.

Despite Hull's struggles, Lewis-Potter chipped in with 17 goal contributions, which has alerted many top-flight clubs.

In January, West Ham were linked with a £15m move for the Tigers ace, although Hull owner, Acun Ilicali has since revealed that he would reject double that amount for Lewis-Potter, who is now wanted by three other Premier League clubs, Southampton, Brentford, and Bournemouth.

What did Barclay say about Lewis-Potter?

He told GIVEMESPORT: "He's a player who seems to be really highly-rated. I can't claim to have watched too much of him, because the only time I would have had a chance was with [England] Under-21s, but he didn't get that much game-time.

"But people seem to talk about him being a really good player, and he definitely fits the mould of a Southampton signing, if they can afford him."

Why do Southampton want Lewis-Potter?

It's not difficult to see why any Premier League club want to get their hands on the exciting attacker.

Not only is he young and English, but this is someone with 42 goal contributions to his name some nine months before his 22nd birthday.

The step up from Championship to Premier League level cannot be underplayed, take Adam Armstrong, who scored twice this season, as an example, but you only have to look at the likes of James Maddison, Michael Olise and Jarrod Bowen to see the type of talent to come out of the second-tier in recent years.

With West Ham being able to offer European football, it'll be far from straightforward for Saints to convince him to join them, but Hasenhuttl's trust in previous younger players like Armando Broja and Tino Livramento are proof that Southampton could be a sensible path for Lewis-Potter to take.
