Many fans feel that WWE’s booking of Cena v Rock II, one year later on from their last encounter, came at the expense of CM Punk’s push.
He was the WWE Champion just before the show, but WWE took the title off him and put it onto The Rock to give his match with Cena more stakes.
Fans, and probably Punk too, feel that he should have been added to the main event, and according to reports, it was apparently the plan at one stage, which you can read more about by clicking here.
McCarthy explains that, at one stage, Punk was asked to cut a promo on The Rock, and he really wasn’t best pleased.
Punk thought that he didn’t have to “put over” the wrestling legend, as McCarthy notes:
I remember Punk being handed a promo about The Rock and him refusing to [say it]. He’s like, ‘So now I’ve got to f*cking put over The Rock? F*ck that.’ I remember that happening. I don’t recall anyone walking out per se.
CM Punk was so angry that he refused to cut the promo, but noted that he didn’t “walk out” of the show.
Punk would go on to leave WWE in January 2014, mainly due to issues with his position within the company.
The former WWE Champion stayed out of wrestling for around seven years, and just as it looked like he was never going to return to the industry, he started working AEW last year.
