Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez admits he wasn't in the best shape ahead of his defeat to Dmitry Bivol and has vowed to be in 'much better physical condition' next time in their rematch.

The Mexican superstar, 31, suffered a unanimous decision defeat in his bid to dethrone WBA light-heavyweight world champion Bivol earlier this month.

Canelo Alvarez's trainer Eddy Reynoso was criticised for his gameplan that night, as he looked to wind up and unleash power shots on his opponent after piling on several pounds of muscle.

Now the 31-year-old intends to work on his cardio and ensure he can go the full distance properly when they step in the ring once again after his trilogy fight with Gennady Golovkin.

Canelo told DAZN: "I'm going to try again for sure.

"I'm a very competitive person, very persevering.

"I tried to gain weight and win this championship, but we didn't make it.

"But we are going to try again only that for a second fight, I would look to be in much better physical condition, prepare myself for the 12 rounds.

"A different strategy to the one I used with my opponents at 168 pounds. You learn from everything. I tried new things, and it didn't work, but now we have a new guideline for what's coming."

Following his most recent setback, Canelo has been bumped from his perch at the top of The Ring Magazine's latest pound-for-pound rankings of the top ten boxers in the world.

Despite it being just the second defeat of his 61-fight career, he has now plummeted down the rankings.

However, it's not something that he is particularly bothered about, as he believes he is still the world's best boxer despite falling to his lowest world ranking for three years.

He added: "The truth is that I don't know how they handle that kind of thing (the pound-for-pound rankings), but I still feel I'm the best.

"Tell me another fighter who is trying in other categories, going down and up in weight, wanting to achieve different kinds of things. Nobody has done that.

"I do it. I risk everything to keep making history when I don't need to risk anything. I've already achieved so many things.

"I'm in a position where I don't have to risk anything, and I still do it, and nobody does that when they are in a position like the one I'm in. So personally, I still feel I'm the best in the world."
