After spurning a chance, the ball then fortuitously fell back to him and he made no mistake at the second time of asking.
However, the offside flag was raised and the goal was ruled out.
Fabinho appeared to get a toe to the ball and it made its way to Benzema, who was standing in an offside position.
Following a VAR check that lasted an eternity, it was decided that the on-field decision was the right one and the goal was ruled out.

Per Independent journalist Miguel Delaney, the goal was ruled out as it wasn’t a deliberate deflection by Fabinho.
Speaking on BT Sport at half-time, Rio Ferdinand declared he was ‘baffled’ by the decision to rule out the goal.
He added: “If I’m a Real Madrid player, I’m going bananas in that changing room right now.”
