World number 1 Novak Djokovic received a rather unfriendly reception from fans ahead of his French Open fourth round tie against Diego Schwartzman.

Despite it all, Djokovic seemed to relish under the pressure. He remained cool, calm and collected, as he cruised to victory and booked himself a well-deserved quarter-final spot.

The Argentinian fans, or just anti-Djokovic fans, made their presence felt, but the Serbian played along with the jeers. After a beautifully timed drop-shot in the third set, he raised his finger to his ear in attempts to raise even more noise from the boisterous crowd.

Eurosport pundit Alex Corretja was quick to criticise spectators who seemed to be lacking a little grace and decorum.

“I don’t like that.

“It’s Novak Djokovic. He has given us so much. Just support both and enjoy the match.

“I hate it when they don’t respect the players or boo them.

“I think it’s pretty much this court. In every match that is played here people are more involved and get in a way a little bit crazier.

“I like the ambiance, I like the atmosphere, I hate when they don’t respect the players.”

Djokovic was also given a tough time during Rafael Nadal’s post-match interview. Mention of his name brought about a series of boos that rang out around Court Philippe Chatrier.

After prevailing 6-1, 6-3, 6-3, Djokovic set up a thrilling quarter-final with Nadal, who will be looking to exact his revenge on the Serbian man after he was beat in the semi-finals of Roland Garros last year.

It seems that there is little to no chance of Djokovic being the fan favourite in next week’s contest, but going by the way in which he handled playing the bad-guy role against Schwartzman, it shouldn’t bother him too much.

Fans were also quick to realise just how little he cared about the reception, and how it actually spurred him on.

One user replied on Reddit saying: "This is the moment he knew the match won't last for too long," while another said: "I hope the crowd will keep booing him. He plays much better this way than when they cheer for him."

"He's come a long way from when he used to get so upset if the crowd was against him. Now he just gives a wry smile and waves," another posted.

"When will people learn, the more you boo him the more powerful he is," said another.

Djokovic was also booed repeatedly at last year’s US Open, before he was eventually shown some respect after he was defeated by Daniil Medvedev.

Both Djokovic and Nadal will battle it out next week in what promises to be a thrilling quarter-final.
