The original PSVR is getting a major rework and a successor in the form of a PSVR 2, which Sony claims will take VR gaming to “a whole new level” and that this headset will have better and superior specifications. 

To take better advantage of PS5’s updated hardware, the new PS5-exclusive headset is claimed to have an increased resolution, a new eye-tracking system, and more. Sony has revealed quite a few details surrounding the upcoming VR console such as the specifications, exclusive games and more.

The original PlayStation VR was released in 2016 for the PS4 system and a lot has changed since then. Sony appears to have learned numerous things and the PSVR 2 looks like a powerful and promising upgrade.

PSVR 2: Release Date

With the new VR console being announced, it’s not surprising that everyone wants to know when will the PSVR2 release. While Sony is being secretive about the hardware’s release, insiders are claiming that PSVR 2 could release as early as Q1 of 2023.

Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst who also keeps track of the technology industry, in one of their tweets said that the PS VR2 will go into mass production in the second half of this year, with 1.5M units being developed. 

Ming-Chi Kuo further added that PSVR 2 might get released in Q1 of 2023, “depending on the development schedule of PS VR2 game titles.” This ties in with Jim Ryan’s promises of launching the VR console with over 20 games. However, Sony is yet to confirm the release date for PSVR 2, so it’s best to wait until any official announcements are made.

PSVR 2 specifications were first shown off at CES 2022, and there’s a lot of cool stuff that’s worth knowing. Below are all the PSVR 2 specs we already know:

  • Resolution – 2,000 x 2,040 per-eye
  • Display – OLED HDR
  • Refresh rate – 90Hz, 120Hz
  • Field of view – 110°
  • Lens separation – Adjustable
  • Cameras – 4 cameras for headset and controller tracking, IR camera for eye tracking per eye
  • Sensors – Motion Sensor: Six-axis motion sensing system (three-axis gyroscope, three-axis accelerometer))
  • Feedback – Vibration on headset
  • Haptics – Headset (will support 3D Audio) and Sense controller
  • Audio – Input: Built-in microphone, Output: Stereo headphone jack
  • Connection – USB-C
  • Weight – < 600g

PSVR 2 Pre-Orders

Unfortunately, the pre-orders for PSVR 2 have not started as of writing, the console is still in development and it will be a while till we get to hear anything about the pre-order dates or launch editions.

PSVR 2 Games

Aside from the VR console itself, another thing most fans are hyped about is all the games that the new PSVR 2 will bring upon its release. Sony has already shown us a brief footage of its upcoming Horizon game called Horizon: Call of the Mountains, designed specifically for the new device.

Apart from that, Sony has promised that players will get to have more than 20 game titles from first- & third-party at their disposal when the PSVR 2 launches.
