Man Utd ‘will be pursuing’ £59.3m Frenkie de Jong alternative at Old Trafford

New Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag on the touchline

Manchester United ‘will be pursuing’ Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic this summer, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Serbia international has been linked with a move away from the Stadio Olimpico for a number of years now, but he seems more likely than ever to seek pastures new.

What is the latest news involving Milinkovic-Savic?

Lazio manager Maurizio Sarri recently revealed that he is convinced Milinkovic-Savic ‘will not remain in Italy’ if he does leave the club in the upcoming transfer window.

And according to FootballTransfers, United’s hierarchy have identified the 27-year-old as an alternative to Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong, who is reportedly at the top of their wish list.

New boss Erik ten Hag is believed to be keen on a reunion with his compatriot after sharing success together during their time at Ajax, yet he is said to be eager to remain in Catalonia.

Therefore, Milinkovic-Savic is reportedly being lined up instead, with FootballTransfers claiming that he has a €70 million (£59.3m) price tag.

European giants Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus are also expected to join the race for Milinkovic-Savic’s signature, though, meaning Ten Hag could face a tough task in trying to bring him to the red half of Manchester.

What has O’Rourke said about Milinkovic-Savic?

O’Rourke believes the Red Devils will be actively following Milinkovic-Savic’s situation as they look to bolster their midfield this summer.

He told GiveMeSport: “I think he’s somebody who United will be pursuing to bring into that midfield, and he’s probably more attainable than a Frenkie de Jong right now.

“So, I think United will be trying to do something on this and trying to bring him to Old Trafford despite after all these years of speculation of him possibly moving there.”

How good is Milinkovic-Savic?

With Paul Pogba set to depart Old Trafford on a free transfer when his contract expires next month, Milinkovic-Savic, who David Amoyal dubbed “unreal”, could be seen as an ideal replacement.

The 6 foot 3 ace registered 11 goals and 12 assists in 47 appearances across all competitions last term, while his underlying numbers also make for interesting viewing.

As per FBref, Milinkovic-Savic won 1.19 tackles, made 1.60 interceptions and pulled off 1.51 blocks per 90 minutes last season, bettering Pogba’s tallies of 0.87, 1.27 and 1.07, respectively.

Pogba racked up a healthy 10 goal contributions in his 27 outings throughout 2021/22 but it seems Milinkovic-Savic may be able to offer more at either end of the pitch to United than the World Cup winner.
