Michael Owen’s daughter, Gemma, has been confirmed as a contestant for the new series of the reality TV show Love Island.
Here’s everything you need to know about the international dressage star:
Who is Gemma Owen?
Owen has competed for Great Britain in dressage for more than eight years and recently took part in the 2021 European Championships.
Her father, Michael, is a former professional footballer, who played as a striker for Liverpool, Newcastle, Real Madrid, Man United and England.
The teenager has also launched her own swimwear line called OG Beachwear. Michael has encouraged his fans to follow the brand online, writing: “Pretty d***n proud of my daughter launching her new @ogbeachwear brand.”
Gemma also boasts more than 9000 Instagram fans on her dedicated dressage account, where she regularly shares photos of her competing in competitions.
Meanwhile, her personal Instagram has almost 50,000 followers as it stands, though this number will no doubt increase now that she has been confirmed for the series.
What has Owen said?
Michael Owen is yet to say anything regarding his daughter’s inclusion on the hit ITV show, but Gemma has stressed that she is “very competitive” as a result of her sporting background.
“Sport has always been a big thing for me and my family. My dad was a professional football player. I’ve competed for Great Britain in dressage since I was 11-years-old. I’ve travelled all across Europe competing in big arena’s in big competitions. I would say I’m very competitive.”
The 19-year-old also revealed what she’d bring to the Love Island villa this year.
“I would say I’m fun, flirty and fiery. I think I’m good at giving advice, I’m a good person to talk to, I’m very honest. If I want the same guy, I’d do it but in a nice respectful way.
“When it comes to relationships I will always go for what I want. But at the same time, I’m not going to mess up something for someone who is in a proper relationship or get in the way of a couple if they have a genuine connection. I wouldn’t do anything to another girl that I wouldn’t be happy with them doing to me.”
