Newcastle: PIF could make 'statement signing' in £50m star at St James' Park

Newcastle United target Moussa Diaby is ‘the sort of signing’ that would really excite supporters, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Magpies have been heavily linked with a move for the 22-year-old in recent weeks as they step up their preparations ahead of the transfer window reopening in just over a weeks’ time.

What is the latest news involving Diaby?

According to The Telegraph, Newcastle want to add Diaby to their attacking options next term and have already ‘made enquiries’ over a deal for the Bayer Leverkusen winger.

It’s claimed that the France international is ‘high on the list of transfer targets’ for manager Eddie Howe this summer after enjoying a successful three-year stint at the BayArena.

Diaby’s current contract doesn’t expire until June 2025, though, leaving Leverkusen in a strong position around the negotiating table.

A previous report by the Daily Mail stated that Newcastle were set to try their luck with a £50 million offer for the creative talent, although his price tag is believed to be closer to the £75m mark.

Howe has been prioritising a wide forward ahead of next term as he looks to build on the solid foundations he put down at St. James’ Park in the second half of 2021/22, with the future of Allan Saint-Maximin still up in the air.

What has Jones said about Diaby?

Jones believes that Diaby’s arrival in the North East of England would get the Newcastle supporters off their seats with excitement.

He told GiveMeSport: “I think for Newcastle fans, this is the sort of signing that would really get you off your seats from the first game of next season.

“So, this is the kind of statement I think Newcastle fans would like to see them make.”

Would Diaby be a good signing?

Diaby enjoyed the most productive campaign of his fledgling career to date in 2021/22, registering 17 goals and 14 assists in 42 appearances across all competitions.

The versatile ace helped Leverkusen qualify for the Champions League and was called up to France’s senior squad for the first time in September, making his debut against Bosnia-Herzegovina.

And Diaby could prove to be the ideal replacement for Saint-Maximin if he does complete a shock exit from Newcastle.

Premier League and Newcastle United all-time top goalscorer Alan Shearer is a true legend of the game, but when did he leave their club?

As per FBref, Diaby made 1.99 key passes, 3.39 progressive passes and 0.52 goal-creating actions while putting in 2.83 crosses per 90 minutes last season.

Saint-Maximin, on the other hand, put up totals of 1.63, 1.79, 0.29 and 2.21, respectively, highlighting why Howe is believed to be so keen on the Leverkusen starlet.
