Man Utd: Ten Hag could bring 'amazing' £50m star to Old Trafford

New Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag looking on from the touchline

Manchester United could land Wolverhampton Wanderers star Ruben Neves as an Old Trafford ‘deal is there to be done at the right price’, according to Daily Express journalist Ryan Taylor.

Erik ten Hag has moved into the Red Devils dugout and, ahead of his first season at the helm, could look to oversee a squad overhaul.

What’s the latest news involving Neves?

According to The Sun, Manchester United are on the verge of making a final push to sign Neves ahead of the transfer window opening for business next week.

The report suggests the Red Devils have been tracking the 26-cap Portugal international for 12 months and Wolves would be willing to sanction his exit if a £50million bid is tabled.

Although Neves’ current employers have opened talks over a new contract at Molineux, he has failed to sign on the dotted line after attracting interest.

The central midfielder’s current deal – which is worth £58,000-per-week – is due to expire in a little over 12 months’ time, so it is clear why Wolves want to tie him down to fresh terms.

But, thanks to his precarious contract situation, Barcelona have also been mulling over whether to test the West Midlanders’ resolve.

What has Ryan Taylor said about Neves?

Taylor believes Manchester United could succeed in their quest to lure Neves to Old Trafford this summer.

The journalist feels the Red Devils will show how keen they are on the 25-year-old in the coming weeks.

Taylor told GIVEMESPORT: “I do think a deal is there to be done at the right price. There’s no reason why, if United do actually want to sign him and they’re hell bent on signing him, it can’t happen.

“I think they will truly establish how serious they are about signing him in due course.”

Why is Neves on Man United’s radar?

Neves’ Wolves team-mate Jose Sa has described him as ‘amazing’, while boss Bruno Lage has alleged he is worth £100million, so it is clear that those at Molineux feel the Manchester United target is a special talent.

He featured 36 times during the 2021/22 campaign and, despite featuring predominantly in a defensive midfield role, chipped in with four goals and two assists.

The statistics show it was an impressive season for Neves as – according to FBref – he was in the 97th and 88th percentile for switches of play and attempted passes among midfielders per 90 minutes in the Premier League respectively.

Man United’s Potential 2022/23 starting XI

Unsurprisingly considering their disappointing season and the change in management, United have been linked to a wealth of players this summer.

Alongside their interest in Neves, Italian sources (via Sport Witness) claim United have already tabled a bid for Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.

The Red Devils are also said to be closing in on a deal for Benfica’s rising star Darwin Nunez, although it remains to be seen where that leaves fellow striker Cristiano Ronaldo.

Right-back Max Aarons has been mooted as a possible addition, as well as Ajax duo Jurrien Timber and Antony.

Should all these signings arrive, United’s starting XI next season could look something like the below…
