NFL insider Albert Breer has been discussing Colin Kaepernick and his future in the league following his tryout with the Las Vegas Raiders.

Having been out of the league for the past five years, last being seen with the San Francisco 49ers in 2016 where he finished with a 1-10 record in 11 starts for the team, Colin Kaepernick could be on his way back to the league after his recent workout with the Las Vegas Raiders.

With team OTAs and preseason work underway, this is the time of year that free agent players are brought in to see what they can do and if they can bring something that a younger player might not be able to.

However, given how well he played during his peak years of 2012-2014, having been away from the sport for so long which prompted a lawsuit against the league as he believed collusion was keeping him out of the game, combined with his off-field activism has made the 34-year-old one of the biggest free agents that the league has seen for some time.

What went down?

According to the majority of reports, despite his time away from the game, things went rather well for the veteran, with the Raiders supposedly ‘impressed’ by what they saw from him on the field, with NFL reporter Ian Rapaport claiming that the door was ‘open’ for a possible deal:

But whilst a deal might be seen as a possibility, if you think that it means Kaepernick is likely to be pulling on the pads and dressing up in the silver and black for real any time soon, then you might want to lower your expectations a bit.

Now he plays the waiting game

According to Breer, who was writing in a column for SI.com, we won’t find out right away whether or not Kaepernick managed to do enough to earn himself a roster spot with the Raiders, as he claims that the team still wants to look at newly acquired QBs Nick Mullens and Jarrett Stidham first:

“There just aren’t a zillion NFL-capable quarterbacks out there. So if you’re going to be a team that looks under every rock, as Josh McDaniels said the Raiders would be last week, this makes sense as one to turn over. For now, my sense is Kaepernick did well enough to keep himself in the discussion. And my guess is the Raiders give themselves the rest of the spring to look at the guys they’ve been working with behind Derek Carr, Nick Mullens and Jarrett Stidham, and then reassess."

So it’s not impossible to think that he might have a role at some point in the future, but the emphasis is very much on the word ‘future’ there, as we might have to wait to see what goes on in Raiders camp first before we find out if the workout was worth it.
