Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal locked horns once again, this time in a quarter final at Roland Garros, putting on a late night epic for the Parisian crowd.

However, John McEnroe was quick to criticise the supporters.

Nadal’s quest for a 14th French Open crown that would move him further ahead at the top of the tree in the most Grand Slam titles continues.

He downed world number one Novak Djokovic in four sets after a gruelling battle.

The Spaniard took the opening set but was clawed back in the second. Nadal then went up a gear, winning set three 6-2 before advancing to the next round in a fourth set tiebreak.

After over four hours on court, Nadal proved once again why he is the King of Clay, coming out on top in another thriller on the surface.

Despite the spectacle put on, the crowd were booing and jeering the Serbian, something that didn’t sit right with John McEnroe.

After Djokovic received similar treatment earlier in the tournament, it seems McEnroe had had enough.

The American was seething, ranting about the crowd saying: "I mean it’s crazy, come on. This guy is a credit to our sport, he comes out on the court, this is one of the greatest matches.”

"They may never see - they will probably never see this match again on this court. Come on. No other player has had to deal with more adversity [than Djokovic].”

“It is unfair, I’ve got to say that. This guy has turned lemons into lemonade more often than any player in the history of tennis, and if you don’t think it bothers him, you’re nuts!”

“He is so mentally tough that he can deal with this and somehow channel that anger and frustration over what he feels is a lack of respect - and I feel it is too.”

The crowd controversy wasn’t the only problem Djokovic had to endure, the game started late to ensure the clash was shown on TV, meaning the pair didn’t leave the court till after 1am local time.

They have to start at 8:45pm to allow Amazon Prime to broadcast the matches, meaning the crowd needed blankets to stay warm! Both players were keen to voice their displeasure at the start time after the game, criticising the scheduling.

Nadal has set up a semi-final clash with third seed Alexander Zverev on Friday.

The German will have his work cut out for himself as Nadal has moved up to 110 wins at Roland Garros from 113 matches, mindblowing stuff!
