Newcastle 'admirers' of 66-goal striker target at St James' Park

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe showing his appreciation to the fans

Newcastle United are ‘admirers’ of Everton star Dominic Calvert-Lewin and could look to lure the frontman to St James’ Park this summer, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

Ahead of his first full season at the helm after being appointed as head coach last November, Eddie Howe may add reinforcements to the Magpies’ squad when the transfer window reopens next week.

What’s the latest news involving Calvert-Lewin?

According to the Telegraph, Newcastle are plotting a big-money move for Calvert-Lewin as Howe looks to bolster his options in the attacking third of the pitch.

The report suggests the 11-cap England international has been made a priority target by the Magpies, who understand Calvert-Lewin would be interested in heading to Tyneside.

Although the 25-year-old succeeded in ensuring Everton would not drop out of the Premier League for the first time in their history, with them finishing four points clear of the relegation zone, it seems he could still move onto pastures new ahead of next season.

That is because the Toffees are reportedly ready to cash-in on Calvert-Lewin and, as a result, Arsenal and West Ham United have been put on red alert.

But Newcastle will fancy their chances of winning the race for the frontman as they became the richest club in world football after the Saudi Arabia-based Public Investment Fund completed a £305million takeover last October.

What has Pete O’Rourke said about Calvert-Lewin?

O’Rourke understands Newcastle and Arsenal are keeping tabs on Calvert-Lewin ahead of potentially pouncing.

The journalist believes Everton will hold out for a lucrative fee if their star striker is to leave Goodison Park.

O’Rourke told GIVEMESPORT: “Calvert-Lewin does have admirers within the Premier League, with the likes of Newcastle and Arsenal.

“It’s going to be a tough summer for Everton to keep hold of him, but I’m sure they will be looking at top dollar.”

Is Calvert-Lewin better than Newcastle’s current options?

Newcastle forked out £25million to sign Chris Wood from Burnley in January, but statistics suggest Calvert-Lewin would be an upgrade on the New Zealander.

According to FBref, the Everton ace averaged more goals and shots on target per 90 minutes than the mid-season Magpies arrival last term.

The 2021/22 campaign also saw Calvert-Lewin rack up a more impressive expected goals ratio than Callum Wilson.

With him finding the back of the net 66 times over the course of his senior club career, it is clear that Calvert-Lewin would be an impressive addition to Newcastle’s squad.
