West Ham United could ‘definitely’ make a move for Burnley striker Maxwel Cornet this summer, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The 25-year-old shone throughout his maiden Premier League campaign last term despite being unable to prevent his side from suffering relegation and has been linked with a move away from Turf Moor as a result.

What is the latest news involving Cornet?

According to The Telegraph, West Ham manager David Moyes ‘is considering a move’ for Cornet as the opening of the upcoming transfer window edges ever closer.

It’s believed that a £17.5 million release clause has become active after Burnley dropped into the Championship following a final-day defeat to Newcastle United, ending their six-year stay in the top-flight.

The Hammers could face stiff competition for Cornet’s signature, though, with fellow Premier League outfit Everton also credited with an interest in his services.

A new forward is believed to be high up on Moyes’ wish list in order to provide some much-needed cover and competition for Michail Antonio, and the versatile star could be an ideal candidate to do just that.

What has O’Rourke said about Cornet?

O’Rourke revealed to GiveMeSport that he could envisage the Irons trying their luck for Cornet but warned that he’s likely to be a ‘very attractive’ option for a number of clubs.

He told GMS: “I could definitely see West Ham making a move for Cornet. This relegation release clause makes Cornet very attractive to a number of clubs, not just in the Premier League but probably abroad as well.

“I think Cornet had a good debut season in the Premier League for Burnley; he was one of their better players.”

Would Cornet be a good signing?

Cornet predominantly played as a left-back for previous side Lyon throughout 2020/21 yet proved to be an effective option upfront for Burnley, earning the praise of pundit Owen Hargreaves.

"He is a fabulous goalscorer and probably one of the signings of the season so far," said the retired England international back in December.

"At £12m, it feels like a snip. He gives them something different, he can be direct, can play on the shoulder and is a fabulous finisher, probably better than anyone anticipated, and he has been terrific for Sean Dyche.”

The pacey poacher registered an impressive nine goals and one assist in 26 Premier League appearances for the Clarets, a figure that would have Cornet West Ham’s third-highest scorer in the league.
