Reports are coming out of New York Jets OTAs that should leave plenty of fans worried about the progression of Zach Wilson.

To say that the New York Jets have been a laughing stock in the NFL for the past few years wouldn’t be too far from the truth. Without a winning season since 2015, they only won six games across the past two seasons, with their 2-14 record in 2020 putting them low enough to draft early in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft.

That pick, the 2nd overall, was used on quarterback Zach Wilson out of BYU, but his first season was one that he will likely want to forget. In his 13 starts, he only put up 2,334 yards, and threw more interceptions than he did touchdowns by a score of 11 to 9.

All that produced just three wins, bringing the team’s overall record to 4-13, the 4th worst record in the league.

Hoping for a breakout?

Having had a year now to adjust to life in the NFL, there is a chance that this year could turn out much better for him.

With the Jets drafting wide receiver Garrett Wilson and running back Breece Hall, both highly rated coming out of Ohio State and Iowa State respectively, the offence could be set for a major jump this season with their newly acquired talent:

The early signs though might suggest that there are some growing pains that need to be worked out.

Just how bad is it?

There are two tweets that can pretty much sum up just how bad things are going for him, one that breaks down exactly how he did and another that might shed some positivity for the team as a whole, but still doesn’t paint him in the best of light:

As Bien-Aime points out, part of it could be put down to the talent that the Jets have brought in, spending two picks in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft on defensive players, cornerback Ahmad ‘Sauce’ Gardner with pick #4 and defensive end Jermaine Johnson II with pick #26.

But reading those tweets and as things stand, it does look like that defence might have to carry the load for a lot of this season, because it doesn’t seem as if Wilson is set to have a breakout year. Let’s just hope that things get better for him between now and the first game of the season.
