The Huddersfield Town midfielder continues to be linked with a move to the Yorkshire club, and O’Rourke thinks he could be a good partner for Phillips in the middle of the park.
What is the latest news involving O’Brien?
According to TEAMtalk, Leeds are one of five Premier League sides currently chasing O’Brien’s signature.
The same outlet claims the 23-year-old has a £12m release clause in his contract, giving Huddersfield little hope of keeping their star following their failure to win promotion back to the Premier League.
This is not the first time talk of Leeds wanting to sign O’Brien has come up, with the club’s director of football Victor Orta actually confirming last year that they tried to buy him in the 2021 summer transfer window.
“It was different valuations,” Orta told the Yorkshire Evening Post when discussing why a deal never materialised. “I respect these kind of things, they happen in football. You have one idea, the club owning the player has another idea.”
“I’m NOT worried about Ten Hag!” Rival fans talk Man United on The Football Terrace…
What has O’Rourke said about O’Brien to Leeds?
O’Rourke likes the idea of O’Brien joining Leeds to partner Phillips in midfield, telling GIVEMESPORT that the Huddersfield star could be perfect for the England international.
Speaking to GMS, the journalist said: “I think Lewis O’Brien’s got real potential. I think playing alongside Kalvin Phillips, they could be the perfect foil for each other. It could be an exciting partnership for Leeds if they manage to sign O’Brien and keep Phillips as well.”
Will O’Brien and Phillips be Leeds’ midfield partnership in the 2022/23 season?
With Huddersfield unable to offer O’Brien Premier League football after their play-off final defeat, you can easily see O’Brien joining a club like Leeds this summer.
The problem, however, is Phillips, who has strongly been linked with a move to Manchester City in recent weeks.
As per The Telegraph, the 26-year-old is Pep Guardiola’s top midfield target, with the Spaniard needing to fill the hole that Fernandinho is going to leave. Considering that, it could be hard to convince Phillips to stay at Elland Road this summer.
Ultimately, while Jesse Marsch may be able to lure O’Brien away from his club, the American could struggle to stop Guardiola from doing the same to Phillips. Therefore, for all the potential it could have, a midfield pairing of O’Brien and Phillips is something Leeds fans probably will not get to see if City come knocking as expected.
