Manchester United have confirmed the departures of several key players following the end of the 2021/22 season.

Following a dismal campaign that saw hopes of a Premier League title push turn into a sixth place finish, another rebuild is on the cards at Old Trafford.

Erik ten Hag has taken charge of the club following the conclusion of Ralf Rangnick's interim period, and with a reshuffle of operations above him, United seem to have pressed the reset button once again.

United have confirmed that Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata will all leave the club in June upon the expiry of their contracts.

They will be following the likes of Edinson Cavani, Nemanja Matic and Lee Grant out of the door, all of whom will also leave the club.

Mata will leave behind a strong legacy at United, despite many feeling he never quite reached the levels expected due to being played out of position so regularly.

Mata was a fan favourite

While Lingard has had his critics for the downfall in recent years, no fans will ever be able to forget the moments he gave United at his best, including goals in the FA Cup, Carabao Cup and Community Shield finals, as well as other iconic moments such as his brace away to Arsenal in 2017.

The jury will always be out on Pogba, who leaves the club for free for a second time in his career, and could subsequently join Juventus for nothing for a second time as a result. His world record return started brightly, but fizzled away after the first few seasons when it became increasingly apparent that he could not find a consistent tune for United.

For most fans, the mass exodus of players is a good thing, no matter the names. Ten Hag is being given a blank canvas to work with, and the club has been forced into a reset of culture and ambitions after such an embarrassing 2021/22.

What the releases do mean, however, is a surprising loss of trophy-winning pedigree at United. In the midst of all the heartache and chaos at Old Trafford, with managers being sacked and 'rebuilds' falling apart time after time, an interesting fact has surfaced following Pogba and Mata's departures.

Marcus Rashford is the only player remaining at the club that started in the 2017 Europa League final under Jose Mourinho, as United beat Ajax 2-0 in Stockholm.

That is a staggering fact, mainly because nobody had really taken notice to the other departures.

In case you need to put names to faces, here is the XI written in full:

Romero; Valencia, Smalling, Blind, Darmian; Herrera, Pogba, Fellaini; Mata, Rashford, Mkhitaryan

Henrikh Mkhitaryan left for Arsenal midway through the following season in an ill-fated swap deal for Alexis Sanchez, while Daley Blind was next to leave at the end of that campaign.

Marouane Fellaini departed for the Chinese Super League halfway through 2018/19 following Mourinho's sacking, before Chris Smalling, Antonio Valencia, Matteo Darmian and Ander Herrera all left at the end of the season, ahead of Ole Gunner Solskjaer's first full season in charge of United.

That quiet disposal of the squad took place during the wild ride that was Mourinho's tenure, and at the beginning of Solskjaer's, the latter of whom managed to clear out the squad somewhat effectively in the summer of 2019.

But since that clear out, more deadwood has accumulated at United and certain players have overstayed their welcome. Pogba, Lingard and Mata finally departing means that their Europa League-winning starting XI of 2017 is now effectively dismantled, barring Rashford, who is unlikely to leave the club.

So, we can officially call that the end of an era at United. And probably one that fans are glad to see the back of, with so many different rebuilds of the same squad still being stuck around the dressing room until now.

Ten Hag is yet to kick off his reign with a signing, but with the transfer window now open, incomings will be expected.
