Back in 2017, Alexander Gustafsson knocked out Glover Teixeira in the fifth round to set up a rematch against Jon Jones.

But it is the manner in which he did it which makes it all the more memorable with each passing year.

Coming into the fight, Gustafsson - who is often regarded as one of the best MMA fighters to have never won a UFC championship - was the No5-ranked light heavyweight in the world at the time.

Current champ Teixeira, by comparison, was just outside the top five according to the official rankings.

Gustafsson started the contest strong as he targeted his Brazilian opponent's head with some wicked elbows and knees in the clinch.

The Swede also nearly almost finished the fight in the second round with a beautiful spinning back elbow that had the home crowd roaring its approval.

Using his height and reach to his advantage, Gustafsson picked apart Teixeira in the fifth round with a series of rapid-fire uppercuts in quick succession.

And it wasn't long before the fight was over as he sent him crashing to the canvas with a vicious overhand right at the 1:07 mark of the final frame.

Referee Marc Goddard immediately waved the fight off rushing to the aid of his fallen opponent.

Gustafsson meanwhile climbed on to the cage to celebrate his victory as he raised both arms above his head in celebration much to the delight of the baying crowd.

After his 18th career win, he said: “He hits hard. He put in some good combinations, but my uppercut worked, and my elbows and knees. He’s a great fighter, and it was my day today.

“He just took every shot. He’s a great fighter. It’s an honour to fight him here in Stockholm.

"I appreciate all the support and the love.”

Gustafsson, 35, also famously proposed to his partner Moa Antonia Johansson after his victory at UFC Fight Night 109.

His wife said yes after he got down on one knee as those in attendance cheered to celebrate the happy couple.

Following his win over Teixeira, Gustafsson was given another opportunity to fight Jones for the vacant light heavyweight title.

Unfortunately for The Mauler, it was Bones that secured a brutal finish in the main event of UFC 232 at The Forum in Inglewood, California.
