George Kambosos Jr vs Devin Haney: Boxing legend Roy Jones Jr explains keys to victory for Haney

Boxing legend Roy Jones Jr says Devin Haney needs to go to the body if he wants to defeat George Kambosos Jr on Saturday night.

Haney, 23, takes on Kambosos Jr, 28, this weekend for all the marbles in Australia.

The two go head-to-head in a historic undisputed lightweight bout at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne with the Australian’s WBA, IBF and WBO world titles on the line as well as the American’s WBC belt.

And if the athletic rangy fighter is to overcome the challenge of fighting away from home in enemy territory, he will have to target the midriff, according to former four-weight world champion Jones Jr.

The 52-year-old ring legend knows exactly what he’s talking about, having won world titles at middleweight, super middleweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight, and is widely regarded as one of the greatest fighters of his generation.

Speaking about Haney, who was seen putting a young fan through his paces earlier this week, Jones Jr told Fight Hub TV: “He’s showed a lot of heart and a lot of coverage to be able to go over to Australia to get it.

“That shows how bad he wants it, and I like that.

“Going to Australia, you’ve got to figure out how to stop the pressure.

Devin Haney will take on George Kambosos Jr on Saturday

“You’ve got to wear him down and try to stop him late with a body shot.

“If you don’t stop him, it’ll be hard to get the decision.”

Haney, naturally, is brimming with confidence ahead of arguably the biggest fight of his career to date.

Speaking in an appearance on The DAZN Boxing Show, he said: “My training is on a totally different level.

“I’m training three-four hours, and I don’t even get tired. I just can’t stop because I’m ready. Only six people have done this in history, and I’m 23-years-old, and I can be doing it now so early in my career.

“I can only thank God for it, but the work’s still got to get done.

“They say that I’m boring, but Devin Haney does what Devin Haney does good.

“It’s hard to get me off my game. I’ve been doing this for so long. But what I’ll do is handicap George of his best things, his best attributes, the things he does best.

“I want to make the [Vasyl] Lomachenko fight. I want to make the Gervonta Davis fight. Ryan Garcia is still on the list.

“I want to make the biggest fights happen.”
