Everton signing Newcastle United player Miguel Almiron would not be a sensible decision, says journalist Dean Jones.

The attacking midfielder has been linked with a move to Goodison Park this summer, but Jones feels his side's willingness to sell should be seen as a "red flag".

What is the latest news involving Almiron?

According to NBC Sports' Roberto Rojas, Everton are one club who are interested in signing Almiron in the upcoming transfer window.

Prior, The Times reported that the 28-year-old could be part of an exodus at Newcastle as manager Eddie Howe looks to continue revamping his squad.

Almiron joined the Magpies from MLS side Atlanta United back in 2019, arriving in a £20m deal, which was a club-record fee at the time.

In the 2021/22 season, the South American attacker made 32 appearances but only managed to score one goal.

What has Jones said about Almiron to Everton?

Jones has told GIVEMESPORT that he would be surprised if Everton bought Almiron and believes he would not be a sensible signing for the Merseyside club.

Speaking to GMS, the transfer insider said: "I'd be very surprised if Everton went down that route. It doesn't seem like a sensible signing to me at all, and the fact that Newcastle are willing to let him move on should really be a red flag."

Should Everton sign Almiron?

No. As highlighted earlier, Almiron failed to make much of an impact in the 2021/22 season. In fact, he has struggled overall since arriving in England.

The campaign prior, he scored just four goals in 34 Premier League appearances, and the one before that, he registered the same amount after playing 36 games - not great numbers for someone who has spent a lot of time playing in attacking positions.

The above is not to say that Almiron could not bring anything to Everton; there is obviously more to football than just scoring goals. However, is he really better than the options they already have?

Out wide, they already possess the likes of Richarlison and Demarai Gray. Of course, in that position behind the striker, Frank Lampard does not have too many options. But with the former Chelsea boss not really deploying a pure No.10 in games during the 2021/22 campaign, an attacking midfielder is not a pressing need.

When you consider all of the above, Everton signing Almiron this summer would make little sense.
