Manchester United star Harry Maguire will be worried about his place in Erik ten Hag's team if Villareal's Pau Torres were to join this summer, according to journalist Pete O'Rourke.

What's the latest news involving Pau Torres?

According to Spanish publication MARCA, Ten Hag wants Torres at Old Trafford at all costs, and sees him as the perfect fit for his philosophy of playing out from the back.

One man of course who had a below-par season in the Premier League last term, was Maguire, whose ailing form eventually saw him being taken out of the firing line by interim manager Ralf Rangnick.

Given that the World Cup is set to take place at the end of this calendar year, Maguire will no doubt be hoping to cement his place at club level to ensure he is at the forefront of England manager Gareth Southgate's plans for this winter, but O'Rourke has indicated he faces a difficult prospect.

What did O'Rourke have to say about Torres and Maguire?

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, O'Rourke admitted that Torres' arrival at Old Trafford this summer would leave Maguire feeling worried about his place at United.

"I'm NOT worried about Ten Hag!" Rival fans talk Man United on The Football Terrace...

He said: "I think any player that sees somebody coming in that plays in the same position as them is going to be worried about their possible place in the team. Ten Hag is going to give everybody a clean slate this summer to have a look, and that will be a chance for Harry Maguire to impress.

"It's never nice for a player if you see your club being linked with a player who plays in the same position as you, so it's definitely going to be a worry for Maguire if Manchester United are pursuing centre-back targets."

Maguire faces fight with Pau Torres at Man Utd

The £200k-a-week Maguire may see the prospect of working under a new manager as the prospect to finally enjoy a new lease of life, with Ten Hag's arrival breathing a sense of much-needed fresh air into the club.

But, with the £45m-rated Torres being linked with a move, and reports also suggesting that the club could reunite Ten Hag with his former Ajax centre-back Jurrien Timber, Maguire is already facing a major battle on his hands ahead of next season.

When you look at some of the key underlying numbers that Ten Hag will no doubt be aware of, it's clear Torres represents a far better fit for the Dutchman's style of play than the England international.

As per FBREF, Torres averages a better overall pass accuracy, boasts a better percentage for dribblers tackled, and completes almost 10% more dribbles per game ie. the Spaniard is extremely comfortable on the ball and taking it into midfield, and excels in one-vs-one defending.

As O'Rourke says, if United do pull off a deal for the Villareal man, then Maguire will no doubt be looking over his shoulder as to what the future could hold for him at the club.
