After another exhilarating Women's Super League season, it's time to regroup, turn to the transfer window and look ahead to the upcoming campaign.Chelsea came out on top to secure their third consecutive title and Sam Kerr picked up her second straight Golden Boot, as well as the PFA Vertu Motors Fans' Player of the Year award.Former Chelsea and Arsenal star Karen Carney discussed the Australian's award-winning season and which team has what it takes to challenge the Blues at the top of the table.Carney spoke with GiveMeSport Women during the PFA Vertu Motors Fans' Player of the Year event last month. "It [the season] was awesome, we always wanted it to go down to the final game of the season. It was great for everyone, great for the neutrals, obviously unfortunate for Arsenal and their fans but that’s football, there’s only going to be one winner. "But it was a great title race, great season, and the battle for third place as well was equally as good."

The England centurion, who won the undisputed quadruple with Arsenal and the FA Cup with both Chelsea and Birmingham, tipped Manchester City to be the side to challenge at the top of the table next season.

She explained that despite their injury-hampered campaign, the six-time WSL runners-up still continued to play well.

"I just think their style of play is really good. I can't fault what Gareth Taylor is trying to do and what the players are trying to do," Carney said. "The bottom line is, if you lose 10 players, you're not going to be able to implement it as good as if you have all your best players.

"I could see that once they got some of those players back, they would start doing well and improve. Once you get your best players back, it gives you a chance.

"If Arsenal or Chelsea had lost 10 players, it would have affected them too. You're only as good as your players."

More success for Sam Kerr

Kerr was crowned the winner of the PFA Vertu Motors Fans' Player of the Year award last month. She edged out the competition with a 28 percent majority vote, adding the award to her already impressive list of individual honours.

The Australian star enjoyed another blistering campaign with Chelsea, winning her second consecutive WSL Golden Boot after netting 20 goals in as many games.

Kerr played a huge part in Chelsea's success during the 2021/22 season. The Blues won their fifth WSL title, extending their winning streak to three back-to-back triumphs, as well as their fourth FA Cup.

The clinical forward was voted winner of the PFA Fans' POTY award ahead of Manchester City's Alex Greenwood, who won 25 percent of the votes, and Vivianne Miedema of Arsenal, with 18 percent.

"I think she’s [Kerr] improved season after season, her goals have been phenomenal and I think for me, she’s been my Player of the Year," Carney said.

"She’s been outstanding, she’s been key to this Chelsea side and not many players could score the goals she did and in the manner she did."

Fellow Gunner Beth Mead took the fourth spot, while Manchester United duo Ella Toone and Alessia Russo rounded off the nominees in fifth and sixth respectively.
