Frenkie de Jong to Man Utd: Holland star's mesmerising highlights vs Belgium

Holland kicked off their 2022/23 UEFA Nations League campaign in spectacular fashion on Friday evening.

Louis van Gaal’s side travelled to Belgium and picked up a hugely impressive 4-1 victory.

Goals from Steven Bergwijn, Memphis Depay (x2) and Denzel Dumfries secured the three points for the Dutch.

It wasn’t as if Belgium rested key players either. Kevin De Bruyne, Eden Hazard and Romelu Lukaku all started the match, but were unable to have any impact whatsoever.

Holland were exceptional on the night, with Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong comfortably the best player on the park.

Operating in his favoured position at the base of the midfield, the former Ajax man wreaked havoc and Belgium just had no answer to his brilliance.

De Jong controlled the tempo of the game, always looked to pass forward and contributed a significant amount in attack, including the assist for Bergwijn’s spectacular opener late in the first half.

The 25-year-old’s individual highlights from Holland’s emphatic victory over Belgium are, unsurprisingly, a joy to watch and they’ve got Manchester United fans even more excited about the prospect of his arrival this summer.

Man Utd fans react to De Jong’s sensational performance

They desperately want him at Old Trafford for 2022/23 – and who can blame them?

United’s midfield struggled enormously throughout the 2021/22 campaign and the departure of Paul Pogba means fresh faces in the department are an absolute must.

De Jong really would be a marvellous summer addition, especially now that Erik ten Hag – the manager he thrived under at Ajax – is now in the Red Devils hot seat.

What year did the UEFA Nations League officially start?

After Holland’s victory over Belgium, De Jong stated that his role with the national team is far different to the one he has under Xavi at Barcelona.

He told the media: “I like to be the first player to receive the ball from the defenders. In the national team I play differently compared to Barca. And I think this one fits me better.”

If United are able to sign De Jong this summer, they need to play him in the exact same way that Holland do…
