Wales legend Jess Fishlock celebrated the men’s team qualifying for the 2022 World Cup in style. The nation qualified for the men’s tournament for the first time in 64 years following a 1-0 victory over Ukraine at the Cardiff City Stadium.Gareth Bale scored the game’s solitary goal, a deflected free-kick, and it was celebrated by a fellow Welsh star.Fishlock shared pictures of herself watching the match in a pub on Twitter, before sharing a photo of herself cheering with the caption: “YESSSSSSS”.Eagle-eyed fans spotted that she was wearing her own match-worn Wales shirt from the Pinatar Cup in February. The 35-year-old, who currently stars for OL Reign, is the most capped Welsh footballer of all time with 132 appearances. She became the first Welsh player to earn 100 caps for the national team in 2017.

Like Bale, Fishlock is yet to play at a World Cup. Her side have never qualified for the tournament, but are currently on track to do so for the next event in 2023.

Wales are currently second in their qualifying group, which means they will not automatically book a place at the Women’s World Cup but must contest a play-off.

The team need to beat Greece and Slovenia in September to progress to the play-off, but they now have inspiration from their male counterparts to act as motivation.

Fishlock was not the only Welsh celebrity to celebrate World Cup qualification – presenter Gabby Logan and actor Michael Sheen were among the others to post about their joy on Twitter.
