West Brom: 59-goal star could be a 'very, very good option' at the Hawthorns

West Brom manager Steve Bruce

West Brom target Dwight Gayle is a “very, very good option” for the Baggies this summer, according to Midlands-based journalist Josh Holland.

The Newcastle striker enjoyed a productive loan spell at the Hawthorns in 2018-2019 and has been regularly linked with a return to the Black Country ever since.

What’s the latest news involving Gayle?

Having struggled to score goals at Premier League level for the Toon Army, the striker was loaned out to West Brom and found his feet, netting 24 times to help the Baggies finish fourth.

But since producing the best goalscoring return of his career, Gayle has become a bit-part player at St James’ Park. In fact, in the three seasons since, he’s played less than 1500 minutes in the top-flight, making only 14 starts.

Gayle signed a new contract last summer but was linked with a loan move to both Nottingham Forest and West Brom in January, and once again faces uncertainty over his Magpies future.

Keith Downie told GiveMeSport last month that Gayle will end his six-and-a-half year affiliation with Newcastle when the window reopens for business, and Holland reckons that a return to West Brom is an option.

What did Holland say about Gayle?

When asked about signing players from Newcastle told GIVEMESPORT: “I think Ritchie could be on too much money for West Brom to get, but I think Dwight Gayle is a very, very good option.

“Obviously with Andy Carroll going, they might want to replace him, although they’ve got a lot of numbers in attack anyway.”

Do West Brom need Gayle?

As Holland mentioned, West Brom decided against offering Carroll a new contract, which means they could opt to bring in a replacement.

However, Steve Bruce still has an impressive trio of proven strikers at his disposal ahead of next season.

Gayle might have racked up 59 Championship goals across his career, but the likes of Karlan Grant, who was the Baggies’ top scorer last season with 18, Callum Robinson, who’s scored 42 times at this level previously, and Daryl Dike, would appear more than enough options heading into the season.

Therefore, unless Bruce doesn’t believe that three strikers is enough to mount a promotion charge, then Gayle returning to the Hawthorns would appear unlikely at this stage.
