Nottingham Forest have been tipped as a potential destination for Aston Villa striker Danny Ings by journalist Josh Holland.

The 29-year-old only arrived at Villa Park from Southampton last August via a £25 million deal but could be on the move once again after struggling to make the desired impact.

What is the latest news involving Forest?

Forest ended their 23-year wait for Premier League football with a narrow win over Huddersfield Town in the Championship play-off final at Wembley last month.

And manager Steve Cooper will surely already be putting transfer plans in place as he prepares to lead the club into the top-flight.

Several established Premier League players such as Nick Pope and Joe Rodon have been linked with moves to the City Ground in recent days yet keeping hold of their promotion-winning side will also be a priority.

The likes of Djed Spence, James Garner and Max Lowe were only on loan at Forest last term, while star winger Brennan Johnson has just 12 months remaining on his current contract.

What has Holland said about Ings?

Securing a reliable source of goals may take precedence over everything else for Cooper, though, and while Forest are expected to hold talks over the permanent signing of loan star Keinan Davis, Holland has tipped his Villa teammate Ings to follow in his footsteps.

He told GiveMeSport: “The only thing with Ings is that he only joined a year ago. And whilst he's been given time, he's not really been starting as much as he did at Southampton, and he offers something slightly different to what Watkins does.

“But if they bring in another striker, you don't want three high-quality strikers, so maybe Ings could return to Southampton, or he can go to maybe one of the newly-promoted clubs.

“Whether Ings would go there and be their star man, like if Forest can’t keep Keinan Davis, maybe they can get him. But then you’re looking at the finances; can they afford it?”

Would Ings be a good signing?

Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan described Ings as a phenomenal finisher” in a recent interview with Football Insider, and his goal record backs that up.

The England international has registered 108 goals and 34 assists in 316 appearances throughout his senior career, illustrating the firepower he would bring to Cooper’s charges.

Whether Forest could afford Ings’ £120,000-per-week wages would perhaps be the biggest stumbling block in any potential deal, meaning the two-time European champions may have to be slightly more pragmatic this summer.
