Newcastle United target Jack Harrison would strengthen the squad at St James' Park, claims The Express journalist Ryan Taylor.

Harrison has impressed at Leeds over the past couple of seasons in the Premier League, and a move to Tyneside could be on the cards for the winger.

What's the latest news involving Harrison?

Harrison really caught the eye in his first top-flight campaign in 2020/21, when he chalked up eight goals and eight assists to help Leeds finish in the top half of the table, with Peter Crouch labelling him "fantastic".

His second season was more of a struggle, but he still ended up getting eight goals, and he scored on the final day against Brentford to ensure that Leeds remained in the Premier League for another year.

Despite his form being a little more patchy over the last 12 months, Harrison has still impressed Newcastle, and The Telegraph has reported that the Magpies are weighing up a move for the £13.5m-rated forward.

What has Taylor said about Harrison potentially joining Newcastle?

Taylor has admitted that Harrison would not be the most glamourous signing, but he still thinks the 25-year-old could follow in the footsteps of Dan Burn and Matt Targett, and make a positive contribution at the North-East club if he moves to Newcastle.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Taylor said: “You need additions that improve the squad. If you look at someone like Dan Burn, it’s not a sexy signing at all, but he’s genuinely improved them. The same with Matt Targett, I know he’s potentially not going to come back now.

“I think Newcastle seem to know what they’re doing. They know that they can’t just play Football Manager and just bring in these £50m signings straight away. They need to build slowly.”

Could Harrison have a similar impact to Burn at Newcastle?

When Burn arrived at Newcastle on deadline day in January, it looked like a safe signing for the club rather than a really exciting one.

Burn has shone at the heart of the team's defence right from the outset, though.

In his first appearance, he was a formidable presence at the back as Newcastle kept a clean sheet to edge past Aston Villa 1-0.

Newcastle would go on to keep five more clean sheets before the end of the season, moving themselves out of the bottom three and into mid-table, and Burn deserved plenty of credit for the part that he played in their resurgence.

If Harrison did join Eddie Howe's side, he may not have the flicks and tricks that Allan Saint-Maximin possesses, but he is a steady winger who can chip in with goals and assists, and his reliability is exactly what Newcastle need as they look to build on their positive second half of last season in order to kick on again next term.
