Leeds United have ‘definitely been offered’ New York City striker Valentin Castellanos, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Whites are known to be in the market for a new forward this summer following Patrick Bamford’s extensive injury problems and could put their faith in the talented 23-year-old.

What is the latest news involving Castellanos?

According to 90min, NYCFC’s parent club Manchester City turned down the opportunity to sign Castellanos but have recommended him to a number of Premier League clubs.

Leeds are said to be the ‘most interested’ party in the Argentina Under-23 international, while West Ham, Newcastle United and Everton are also listed as potential suitors.

However, The Mirror have previously claimed that it’s in fact the Hammers who are in pole position to prise the South American starlet away from the MLS.

It’s claimed that manager David Moyes sees Castellanos’ £12.8 million price tag as a risk worth taking, although it’s a fee Argentine admirers River Plate cannot afford.

What has Jones said about Castellanos?

Jones has revealed that out of Leeds’ transfer targets, Castellano is ‘the one to look out for’ and states that although he may not be a name that gets fans ‘particularly excited’, he has had a good year.

He told GiveMeSport: “I think Castellanos is the one to look out for, they've definitely been offered him. They're weighing it up at the moment.

“Again, it might not be a player that gets Leeds fans particularly excited, but he's actually had a really good year in MLS.”

How good is Castellanos?

Castellanos is one of the hottest properties in MLS after winning the Golden Boot last year, racking up 19 goals in 32 regular-season appearances, and providing a further eight assists on top of that.

The 5 foot 10 ace went on to score three goals in three play-off outings to fire NCYFC to MLS Cup glory, while he's already registered 11 goals and five assists in 18 games during the current campaign, taking his career tally up to 58 efforts.

Leeds manager Jesse Marsch is likely to know Castellanos’ qualities well, given he plies his trade in his homeland, and could look to get ahead of West Ham in the race for his signature.

USA international Brenden Aaronson has already arrived at Elland Road from Marsch’s former club Red Bull Salzburg, and Castellanos, who has been labelled "exceptional" by journalist Conor McGilligan, may become the latest addition to the Leeds revolution.
