Manchester United face a bidding war if they want to sign Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni this summer, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

The Red Devils are the latest club to be linked with the Italian, and Jones believes his side will try to bring multiple parties to the table should they decide to sell him this summer.

What is the latest news involving Bastoni?

The Daily Mail recently reported that United have made an enquiry about Bastoni, who has been described as a "phenomenon", as they look to strengthen their defence.

According to the same outlet, the centre-back is also a target for Tottenham and would cost around £50m, though his agent has claimed that he will be remaining at the San Siro.

Bastoni, of course, knows Spurs manager Antonio Conte well, playing 74 times under his compatriot when he was still Inter boss.

It looks like United, however, will try to wreck the reunion Conte is planning.

What has Jones said about Bastoni and United?

Jones thinks if Inter choose to let Bastoni go this summer, then they will try to bring United and other clubs into the equation to raise the 23-year-old's price.

The transfer insider told GIVEMESPORT: "I’m not sure too much has moved on with Bastoni but it’s fair to say that if Inter are contemplating selling him, they’ll want more than one club bidding to buy him. So United won’t be the only club linked with him, I’m sure"

Who could Bastoni replace at United?

After the difficult season he had, many United fans would say Harry Maguire. However, new manager Erik ten Hag seems to be a fan of the England international, while he is also club captain.

Speaking about Maguire at his unveiling as Red Devils boss, Ten Hag said: "I have to repeat that next season is a different season, but I think he did a great job.

"He's a great player, he's achieved already a lot really also [with his] contribution to Manchester United. So I'm looking forward to working with him."

With that in mind, could Raphael Varane perhaps then be the one to drop out should Bastoni or another centre-half arrive at Old Trafford this transfer window?

Much was expected when the Frenchman, who has four Champions League titles to his name, joined United from Real Madrid last year. However, he did not make the desired impact, though injuries were partly to blame.

It remains to be seen if United's interest in Bastoni materialises into a bid, but if it does and Ten Hag ends up winning the race for him, it is going to be fascinating to see what back four the Dutchman puts out next season.
