Jon Jones vs Stipe Miocic: Dana White provides update

UFC president Dana White has confirmed that plans are in place for Jon Jones to take on Stipe Miocic.

While there are plenty of mouth-watering divisions in the Ultimate Fighting Championship, most notably bantamweight and lightweight, there’s something so intriguing about the land of the heavyweights. The champion at the top of the billing is regularly known as the ‘baddest man on the planet’ and that’s the kind of distinction people don’t forget about in a hurry.

At this moment in time, Francis Ngannou is the reigning UFC heavyweight king and in his current absence, the promotion needs to start thinking about what they’re going to do in the interim.

The answer, of course, is fairly obvious – an interim championship.

The leading contenders to battle it out for such a prize are Stipe Miocic and Jon Jones, and in a recent interview, Dana White provided an update on how negotiations are going for that contest.

“I agree with you 100% that he [Jon Jones] is still the greatest of all time. Yeah, obviously, we’ve got Francis right now, his knee, we’re waiting on that, see how long that’s going to be. Then, you know, him and Stipe [Miocic] probably makes sense. Either Vegas or New York.”

If it gets pushed all the way back to the annual New York card at Madison Square Garden, which takes place in November, we probably won’t see a unification fight for quite some time.

The return of The Predator

Francis Ngannou is currently recovering from knee surgery to repair a torn MCL and a damaged ACL, both of which came from the build-up to his UFC 270 showdown with Ciryl Gane.

He’s expected to be back by the end of the year but if there’s an interim title fight ongoing by that point, he may decide to test the waters with a Tyson Fury mixed rules bout.

Ngannou has made it crystal clear that he intends to keep fighting for at least five more years in combat sports, but there’s no guarantee it’ll be in the UFC, especially with White not giving too many specifics on the nature of his relationship with the champ during the above interview.
