Man Utd could 'offer more money' to £68m target at Old Trafford

Manchester United may be able to tempt Sergej Milinkovic-Savic away from Lazio this summer, according to Italian football journalist Conor Clancy.

Milinkovic-Savic has spent the last seven years in the Italian capital, but he could be ready for a move away in the coming months.

What’s the latest news involving Milinkovic-Savic?

The 27-year-old has been linked with a move to United and Serie A giants Juventus, but Lazio boss Maurizio Sarri does not seem to think that Milinkovic-Savic will stay in Italy if he leaves Lazio.

“Speaking to the President, I have become convinced that if Milinkovic does leave, and that will not happen easily, he will not remain in Italy,” he said last month, as quoted by talkSPORT.

These comments appear to open the door for United to make their move to try to sign Milinkovic-Savic, who Lazio value at €80m (£68m).

What has Clancy said about Milinkovic-Savic?

Clancy has stated that he thinks Milinkovic-Savic should choose Juventus over United as the Italian side can offer him Champions League football.

However, he has admitted that money could play a part in the midfielder’s decision, and this could lead to him moving to the Premier League club.

Clancy told GIVEMESPORT: “If I were Milinkovic-Savic, and I had the choice of going to Juve or United, I’d go to Juventus every day of the week because Juventus will be playing in the Champions League, United won’t be.

“United are a bit of a basket case, why would he go there? I’m not so sure. I think Milinkovic-Savic is better than playing for Manchester United at the moment, but money talks as well. United could probably offer him a little bit more money that Juventus could, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see him go there. He’s more than good enough.”

Do you know this obscure Manchester United footballer from the 1990s?

Would Milinkovic-Savic fix United’s midfield problems?

Not by himself.

United are in desperate need of a holding midfielder, and that is not the role that he thrives in.

Still, he has plenty of other attributes that would be welcomed at Old Trafford. Last term, he registered 11 goals and 11 assists in Serie A, a fantastic return for a central midfielder who does not take penalties.

His underlying numbers were also very impressive for the season, as he ranked in the 98th percentile for progressive passes received, the 90th percentile for shot-creating actions and the 92nd percentile for aerial duels won when compared to other midfielders in Europe’s top five leagues, according to FBref.

These statistics highlight how Milinkovic-Savic has a very well-rounded skillset, and if Erik ten Hag could bring in a high-class defensive midfielder to play alongside him, the Serbian talent could flourish for the Red Devils, should he choose to move to the red side of Manchester.
