Lionel Messi really has scored some of football's most mind-blowing goals.

From rinsing entire teams, to Panenka free-kicks, to making one of the best centre-back/goalkeeper combinations look silly in a matter of seconds, the Argentinean really can do it all.

In fact, one could spend hour upon hour reminiscing on some of his finest strikes, go to bed, wake up, and continue on the next morning.

For decades to come, fans will debate which finish might just be his best and, for all of those decades, you can imagine that the debate will never truly be settled.

It's very rare that Messi scores a so-called ugly goal and, even when he does, that goal will still make global headlines simply because it was Messi who got the final touch.

Every now and then, though, even the great man does make a bit of a hash of bundling the ball into the net.

Never was Messi's humanity more on show than in a clash with Espanyol 15 years ago when, while going for a header, Messi ended up performing his own rendition of one of the most infamous goals ever.

With Barcelona trailing going into the break, a deflected cross looped Messi's way and, as he craned his neck, he managed to get a touch on it ahead of the sprawling goalkeeper.

However, from the moment the goal was awarded something seemed amiss, with furious Espanyol players crowding and remonstrating with the bemused referee.

It seems they had a very good point as well, with replays showing that Messi had just emulated one of his greatest idols, Diego Maradona, in scoring with his hand.

You can see the moment in the clip below:

You can hardly blame the opposition for being so upset.

The parallels between Messi's touch and Maradona's controversial 'Hand of God' goal vs England all those years ago are crazy.

Messi would go on to score again in the second half but, fortunately, Espanyol managed to snatch some justice with an injury-time equaliser forcing a draw.
