Finnish footballer Ria Öling has shared a photo of a gruesome eye injury inflicted by an opponent’s fake nails.
The 27-year-old was playing for Swedish side FC Rosengård against IFK Kalmar yesterday, and although her side triumphed 6-0, she ended up with more than she bargained for.
In a photo posted on her Instagram Story, Öling was shown with a scratch on her cheek and a bloody eye.
Her caption read: “Six goals, three points, and one beautiful eye from today’s game 🤪”.
Olivia Schough, Öling’s teammate at FC Rosengård, also posted a photo with the caption: “When the opponent has long fake nails 😤”.
Although jewellery is prohibited while on the pitch, there is currently no rule preventing players from wearing fake nails. Perhaps Öling’s shocking injury may start a debate about implementing a ban.
FC Rosengård’s victory against IFK Kalmar kept them at the top of the Damallsvenskan, the highest division of women’s football in Sweden.
They lead the table with 33 points, five points ahead of second-placed Linköpings FC, although the season is only at the halfway point.
Öling joined FC Rosengård in December 2020, scoring five goals in 34 appearances so far. The midfielder has previously played for Brøndby IF and Växjö DFF.
She has also made over 50 appearances for Finland so far, and is set to play for her country at Euro 2022. The 12-team tournament, which will be held in England, starts on July 6th.
