Liverpool will be looking out for potential midfield signings this summer, according to journalist Pete O'Rourke.

The Reds were interested in signing Aurelien Tchouameni from Monaco, but they have now missed out on the talented youngster.

What's the latest news involving Tchouameni?

The 22-year-old, who can play as a holding midfielder or slightly higher up the pitch, was linked with a move to Liverpool after a fine 2021/22 season which saw him break into the French national team.

However, he has now joined Real Madrid instead, with The Athletic reporting that the Spanish giants have agreed a total package with Monaco worth over €100m (£85m).

The deal was announced by the La Liga giants on Saturday.

What has O'Rourke said about Liverpool's transfer plans?

O'Rourke expects Liverpool to bounce back quickly from failing to sign Tchouameni as he feels Jurgen Klopp will be keen to bolster his squad in the middle of the park.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “I’m sure Jurgen Klopp and his recruitment team will be looking at possible midfield alternatives to see who they can possibly bring in to strengthen the squad, because I’m sure Nunez up front and possibly someone for midfield are probably the two key positions Liverpool need to fill this summer.”

Why do Liverpool need another midfielder?

Liverpool started the Champions League final with a midfield trio of Fabinho, Jordan Henderson and Thiago Alcantara. That is a combination of players that most teams in the world would love to have.

However, the latter two are now into their thirties, and Klopp may be wary of relying on them too much moving forward, especially if Liverpool continue to make it to the final stages of every competition.

In terms of back-up options, Klopp can call upon Naby Keita and James Milner, but the former has had his fair share of injuries over the years, while Milner is now 36.

The Liverpool boss could put more faith in youth next season by turning to the likes of Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliott and even new signing Fabio Carvalho.

However, adding another midfielder to the team would ease the pressure on the youngsters coming through, and would provide healthy competition for the first-choice players, which should allow Liverpool to kick on again when the season gets underway in August.
