Rangers target Josh Tymon ‘would definitely improve the squad’ at Ibrox this summer, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The 23-year-old has been linked with a move away from Stoke City in recent weeks after enjoying another impressive season with the Championship outfit.

What is the latest news involving Tymon?

According to The Scottish Sun, Rangers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst has placed Tymon on his wish list but may be forced to wait until late in the transfer window to snap him up.

That’s because the highly-rated defender is believed to have a £5 million price tag, a fee the Gers will only be able to afford if they cement their place in the Champions League group stages.

Selling first-choice left-back Borna Barisic to make room for Tymon is another avenue that Van Bronckhorst could explore, although the Croatia international is a key part of his setup.

And Football Insider have provided an update on Tymon’s situation, claiming Rangers have ‘registered their interest in signing’ the marauding full-back.

The versatile Calvin Bassey, alongside Barisic, is believed to be on the radar of several clubs, and the former England Under-20 international is seen as an ideal replacement if either player departs.

What has O’Rourke said about Tymon?

O’Rourke believes Tymon is an ‘exciting, young’ player with ‘huge potential’ who would bolster the current options available to Van Bronckhorst.

He told GiveMeSport: “I think Josh Tymon had a really good season for Stoke City; he’s got huge potential and is an exciting, young left-back. So, I think if Rangers were able to sign him, he would definitely improve the squad.”

Would Tymon be a good signing?

Tymon moved from boyhood club Hull City to Stoke back in July 2017 when he was just 18, and his bold decision has certainly been justified.

Loan spells at MK Dons and Portuguese outfit Famalicao helped to shape the 5 foot 10 ace, and he’s established himself as one of the Championship’s most reliable left-backs in recent years.

The youngster racked up three goals and four assists in 48 appearances across all competitions last term, and his underlying numbers were also pretty eye-catching.

As per WhoScored, Tymon averaged 1.2 key passes, 1.1 dribbles, and 0.9 crosses per league game throughout 2021/22, placing him third in every metric when compared to his teammates.

His ability to contribute in the final third of the pitch will surely be an appealing aspect of his game to Van Bronkhorst given Rangers’ relative dominance over the majority of teams in Scotland, easing the blow of losing Barisic or Bassey, should they depart the club.
