Rangers will ‘reluctantly have to listen to offers’ for star striker Alfredo Morelos this summer if he refuses to sign a new contract, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The highly-rated 25-year-old only has 12 months remaining on his current contract, meaning he could depart Ibrox on a free transfer in a year’s time if the club doesn’t sanction his sale beforehand.

What is the latest news involving Morelos?

Morelos has long been linked with a move away from Rangers after establishing himself as one of the standout performers in Scottish football over the last five years.

The Colombia international has seen moves to LOSC Lille and FC Porto collapse late on in previous windows before eventually staying put in Glasgow.

However, Morelos is now at a crossroads in his career. His outstanding exploits have also attracted the attention of Newcastle United, Everton and Leicester City in the past, but no concrete offers have arrived for his services this summer.

Key Rangers duo Scott Arfield and Connor Goldson have signed new deals and committed their futures to Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s revolution in recent times, and now Morelos must decide whether to do the same or seek a new challenge.

What has O’Rourke said about Morelos?

O’Rourke told GiveMeSport: “It would make sense for Rangers to try and offload Morelos this summer if he isn't going to sign a new contract.

“Obviously, Morelos has been a huge player for Rangers over the last few number of years, but his form has brought him to the attention of a number of clubs in the Premier League and also in Europe as well.

“So, if they're not able to agree a new deal with Morelos, I think Rangers will reluctantly have to listen to offers for the Colombian in the summer.”

How big a loss would Morelos be?

Morelos has been Rangers’ talisman since arriving from HJK Helsinki in July 2017, bagging a remarkable 113 goals in 224 appearances while also laying on a further 51 strikes.

The South American star, who earns £33,000-per-week, fired the Gers to their first top-flight title in 10 years in 2020/21, and although a thigh injury curtailed his campaign, he still played a pivotal role in their success last season.

Morelos scored crucial goals against Sparta Prague, Borussia Dortmund and Red Star Belgrade as Rangers reached the Europa League final, and Van Bronckhorst will have a tough task replacing him, should he depart the club.
